<06-26-2016> Choppy sound during network activities on ThinkPad E430 (Conexant 20671) w/ Win10

Before trying to fix your problems, it is better to back up your important data and carefully check present configuration of your devices.

This is what I've experienced after upgrading Win7 to Win10. Although I uninstalled and reinstalled the device driver of the sound card several times, it wasn't resolved.

In my case, I realized that choppy sound occurred only when there were network activities on my PC.

For example, sound rarely came choppy when I simply opened foobar2000 right after startup, while a music played on foobar2000 began to be choppy frequently (every a few seconds) after I opened Google Chrome.

Thus I suspected that this problem had a relation to some problem with the network devices.

As a result, it was true.

What I did is below:

  1. Press [Win] + X and open Device Manager.
  2. Open the tree of Network adapters.
  3. There is a list of devices in Network adapters tree. Double-click one of them to open the property dialog.
  4. Open the Driver tab and click “Update Driver”.
  5. Unless the device needs some special configuration, select “Search automatically for updated software”.
  6. When there's something to update, Windows automatically starts to download and install it. Wait until the update completes.
  7. If Device Manager demands to reboot, reboot PC.
  8. Perform 3 to 7 on every device listed in Network adapters tree if chopping still occurs.

When I checked Device Manager, the device named “Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller” used an obsolete driver (though I didn't check its version, I saw its date was in 2012!).

After I updated that driver, I never face choppy sound, even with browsing the Internet or performing Windows Update.
